Whitefish Point Light Station
Established in 1849
Whitefish Point is the oldest active light on Lake Superior. The Keepers Quarters Dwelling attached to the light has been fully restored and is open for tours. Constructed in 1861 at the order of President Lincoln, exhibits reflect the life of the light keeper and his family at the turn of the century, circa 1890-1920.
Superiors' Shipwreck Coast
Whitefish Point marks the critical turning point for all ships entering or leaving Lake Superior. The treacherous waters that extend west from Whitefish Point 80 - miles to Munising Michigan, have earned the ominous title "Graveyard of the Great Lakes".
Violent storms, poor visibility combined with congested shipping lanes at the Point, have exacted a heavy toll ships and lives.
Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial
Of the 6000 ships lost on the Great Lakes, the Edmund Fitzgerald has become the most famous. On November 10, 1975,
in one of the worst storms to hit Lake Superior in decades, the Fitzgerald sank with its entire crew of 29 just
17 miles Northwest of Whitefish Point.
During the summer of 1995, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society, Canadian Navy, and National Geographic Society, raised the Bell of the Fitzgerald, honoring a request by surviving family members to establish a permanent memorial at Whitefish Point to remember their loved ones.
