Athletes from across the Upper Peninsula will gather in Marquette the weekend of January 15-16 to participate and compete in the 23rd annual Winter Games for Special Olympians. The games are named in honor and memory of Rico N Zenti, former Physical Education Department Head at Northern Michigan University . Dr Zenti was instrumental in establishing the very first competition for Special Olympians hosted by NMU in the early 1970's.
Competition opens Friday afternoon at Marquette Mountain with the downhill skiing and snowboarding competition beginning at 2:00 PM. Immediately following the events, dinner will be served at the Mountain. Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM it is the always popular dance at the Holiday Inn, the local headquarters for the annual games. Music is provided by Lake Effect Entertainment.
Saturday morning the official Opening Ceremonies start the day's events at the Superior Dome. The Parade of athletes begins promptly at 9:00 AM and includes the following lineup:
Knights of Columbus
NMU ROTC
State Farm Agents
NMU sports teams:
Football, Basketball, Hockey, Volleyball track and Soccer
United States Olympic Education Center Teams:
Greco-Roman wrestling, Short Track Speedskating, Womens' Freestyle
Wrestling, Weightlifting and Boxing area High school Cheerleaders
Featured in the Parade are athletes from Delta-Schoolcraft, Gogebic-Ontonagon, Dickinson-Iron, Eastern U.P. and the host Marquette-Alger areas.
As in the upcoming Winter Games the Opening Ceremonies is highlighted by the Lighting of the Olympic Torch with many local dignitaries offering Welcome Messages, an Invocation and the playing of the National Anthem.
All events and activities are open to the public at no charge.
Special Olympic Oath: "Let me win; but, if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
